What is placenta Encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that involves steaming, dehydrating, and grinding the placenta into a powder, which is then placed in pills for the mother to ingest.

Why encapsulate my placenta?

Placenta encapsulation can offer many benefits such as lower chance of postpartum mood disorders, increased milk supply, less stress hormones, higher levels of oxytocin (the bonding hormone) and replenishing nutrients and hormones. With most of our evidence on placenta encapsulation being anecdotal it is important to know that your benefits of placenta encapsulation will be unique.

What does the process look like

Your placenta will be picked up and labeled at your place of delivery. The placenta will stay separate and labeled for the entirety of the encapsulation process. Your placenta will be drained, steamed, dehydrated and ground into gelatin or vegan capsules. You will also receive a cord keepsake with the capsules . After the process is complete you will have your capsules and cord keepsake dropped off at your house.

Steps taken to ensure safe placenta encapsulation

Before the processing of the placenta each surface is disinfected with a 10% bleach solution. The placenta will be kept in a freezer until it is time to be encapsulated. During the steaming your placenta will be brought up to 160° which kills any harmful bacteria. It will then be dehydrated at 160° or higher for 12-24 hours.
